The Waste Electrical and
Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive has already been adopted by many
countries in the EU and has also been transposed into UK law since
August 2004. The WEEE directive sets recycling and recovery targets for
producers of WEEE and is based on the producer responsibility
principle. WEEE also prohibits the disposal of IT equipment into
landfill. Thus, any IT equipment that becomes redundant cannot simply
be 'skipped' anymore. It has to be disposed of in an environmentally
friendly manner.
Landfill
Directive
The landfill directive and the
Waste Accpetance Criteria (WAC) for various landfills also impacts on
all kinds of businesses wishing to dispose of WEEE through the landfill
route. In effect it has been banned and now any business wishing
to dispose of WEEE, they must use an authorised disposal service.
